Apart from biomarker discovery, lipidomics could help to reveal the pathogenesis related to cancer. Till now, numerous studies have shown that de novo FA synthesis was a critical regulator of cancer growth. Here are some studies.
- The sole carbon source and precursor for both FA and cholesterol biosynthesis in mammalian cells is acetyl-CoA. The study revealed that the activity of acetyl-CoA synthetase 2, an enzyme that converts acetate to acetyl-CoA, contributed to cancer cell growth under low-oxygen and lipid-depleted conditions by enhancing the ability of cancer cells to use acetate as an additional nutritional source. It was a potential molecular target for managing cancer growth.
- PLs also play an important role in cancer. Two of the most commonly activated pathways in human cancer are the PI3K‐Akt and the Ras pathways. A study investigated the function of individual PL in cell cycle regulation, showing that 20:4‐PC oscillates during the cell cycle and delays cell cycle progression by inhibiting Akt membrane binding.
